Legal stuff — kept human

Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026  ·  Data controller: Paul Taylor

We've tried to write this in plain English rather than legalese, because you've got enough to deal with without wading through impenetrable small print. If anything's unclear, just ask. We promise it won't take many spoons.

Who we are

This website — burntwoodspoonies.uk — is run by Sha Taylor and Paul Taylor as part of the Burntwood Spoonies Connect community initiative, under the Wheely Happy Days brand. The data controller is Paul Taylor.

What we collect

This site uses Open Web Analytics (OWA), a self-hosted analytics tool, to understand how people use the site. When you visit, OWA may record:

Your IP address itself is not stored. We collect no names, email addresses, or any information that identifies you personally. Unfortunately we also can't track how many spoons you've used reading this, but we appreciate the effort.

That's genuinely it. No advertising cookies. No Facebook pixel. No Google Analytics. No data sold or shared with third parties. The analytics data lives on a server Paul controls, goes nowhere else, and is almost certainly less interesting than whatever you were reading before you ended up on a privacy policy page.

Why we collect it

We use analytics data to understand how people find the site, which sections are most useful, and whether anything isn't working properly. That's it. Our legal basis for processing this data is legitimate interest — we have a genuine need to understand how a community website is being used in order to improve it.

How to opt out

When you first visit the site, a small banner appears at the bottom of the page. Clicking "No thanks" opts you out of analytics tracking entirely. Your preference is saved in your browser's local storage so the banner won't reappear.

If you dismissed the banner and changed your mind, clearing your browser's local storage for this site will reset your preference and show the banner again on your next visit. We won't be offended. Probably.

OWA also respects your browser's Do Not Track setting if enabled.

Cookies

OWA sets a single first-party cookie to distinguish between visits. It contains no personal information. It expires at the end of your session or after 30 days, depending on your browser settings.

No third-party cookies are set by this site.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to ask what data we hold, request its deletion, or raise a concern about how it's handled. Because we don't collect personally identifiable information, there's not much to ask about — but you're welcome to get in touch if you have questions.

Third-party links

This site links to Facebook groups and pages, Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp, and other external services. Once you leave this site, their own privacy policies apply. We have no control over what they collect.

Changes to this policy

If anything significant changes about how we handle data, we'll update this page and change the "last updated" date at the top. We won't suddenly start doing anything dodgy and hoping you don't notice. We're a chronic illness support community, not the DWP.

Contact

If you have any questions about this privacy policy or how your data is handled, you can contact Paul Taylor at paul@theaardvark.co.uk. He'll try to respond promptly, AuDHD and Long Covid permitting.
